Improvisation Sculpture Project

Improvisation Sculpture Project is an ongoing durational practice exploring material agency, border economies, and collective memory through radical ephemerality. The artist negotiates entry into private spaces along the China-Vietnam border—homes, factories, shops—transforming them into transient studios. Using only objects found on-site (trade goods, tools, domestic items), they improvise temporary sculptures through intuitive physical dialogue with the space.

The process is meticulously documented: video captures the sculptor’s movements, the formation of precarious assemblages from cross-border commodities, and their deliberate disintegration. Every object is then returned to its exact original position, erasing the intervention. This ritual mirrors the fluidity of borderland identity and trade, where goods circulate as vessels of cultural exchange while political boundaries remain fixed.

By foregrounding improvisation within liminal zones, the project exposes hidden narratives material Diplomacy (everyday objects such as Chinese factory exports, Vietnamese agricultural tools) become actors in fleeting monuments to interconnected labor), geopolitical Intimacy ( private spaces reveal how global trade permeates domestic life in contested regions) and ephemeral Monumentality (the video archive persists as a testament to sculptures that exist only in gesture and memory, critiquing permanence and ownership).

A silent negotiation of trust, labor, and impermanence, the project reframes the border not as a line, but as a living tissue of human and material exchange.
